In the 2012 London Olympic Games, there were racing events where the time difference between the competitors was small.

Suppose you meet a 24 year old athlete from your home town who, came in 4th in their swimming event. The athlete practiced 4 hours a day for four years to prepare for the event. They did everything their coach said to do.

In their race, the time difference between the gold, silver and bronze metal winners and 4th place was 1/10 of a second. The athlete’s parents, brother and sister watched from the stands. The family took out a loan to travel to London to watch them swim. Each travel package cost 20,000 US dollars.
